Visitor questions
Tower of London FAQ
Honest, plain-English answers to the questions we’re asked most often. If yours isn’t here, the friendly staff at the ticket office will always help.
- How long do you need at the Tower of London?
- Most visitors spend 3 to 4 hours. Allow a full day if you want to join a Yeoman Warder tour, take your time over the Royal Armouries and see the Ceremony of the Keys.
- What is the best time to visit the Tower of London?
- Weekday mornings outside school holidays are quietest. Aim to arrive at opening time (09:00 Tue–Sat, 10:00 Sun–Mon) and head straight to the Crown Jewels before the queue builds.
- Do I need to book tickets in advance?
- Yes — booking online is cheaper than buying at the gate and lets you skip the ticket queue. You will still queue briefly for security.
- Is the Tower of London good for children?
- Very much so. Kids love the armour, the ravens, the Yeoman Warders and the family trails available at the entrance. Under-5s go free.
- Are buggies and pushchairs allowed?
- Yes, but the site is cobbled and many buildings have stairs. You can leave a buggy near the Jewel House while you go through, and there are baby-change facilities in the main toilets.
- Can I take photos at the Tower of London?
- Photography is welcome across almost all of the site. The only place cameras are not allowed is inside the Jewel House, where the Crown Jewels are displayed.
- Is there food inside the Tower?
- Yes — the New Armouries Café serves hot food, sandwiches and cakes. There are also kiosks for coffee and ice cream. You are welcome to bring your own picnic and eat it in the grounds.
- Is the Tower of London wheelchair accessible?
- A step-free route covers most of the site, including the Crown Jewels. The upper floors of the White Tower are reached only by original medieval spiral stairs. Manual wheelchairs can be borrowed at the entrance.
- How much does the Tower of London cost?
- Adult tickets start at £33.60 online, with reduced prices for children, concessions and families. Always check the official Historic Royal Palaces website for current pricing.
- How do I get to the Tower of London?
- The nearest Tube is Tower Hill (3-minute walk). Tower Gateway DLR, Fenchurch Street National Rail, several bus routes and Thames Clippers to Tower Pier all bring you within a short walk.
